In the basic game of poker, you must first ante a certain amount of money. You can do this by betting into the pot in the middle of the table. The player with the highest hand wins the pot. The betting rounds move clockwise, and players can raise or fold their initial bet. Generally, the higher the hand, the more you can win.

After every round of betting, the remaining players reveal their hands. The winner of a round is the player with the best five-card hand. During the final betting round, only those players who have not folded are left in the game. The game ends when one player wins the entire amount of money that they put down as a buy-in.

When the game has started, each player will place a bet. The bet must be the same as the amount of chips in the pot. The player may increase his bet if his or her hand is the best one. However, if he is not able to raise his bet, he or she will be “out” of the round.

Poker is played with a standard 52-card deck. Some variants include jokers. The cards are dealt clockwise from the dealer. In casual play, the dealer rotates among the players. The dealer button is a white plastic disk that indicates the nominal dealer. The dealer then deals each hand clockwise around the table.

The game can have as many as nine players, but is typically played with six or eight. The winning hand is determined by the highest five-card combination. The best hand wins the pot. For example, the highest five-card combination is called a straight flush, and the lowest five-card combination is four of a kind.
